Alpaca Facts

Our Store Stud Muffins Looking for a Home Peoh Point History

Hello, My name is Miss Eve.

I was born in September, 2002 and was the first to be born at Peoh Point Alpaca Farm.
I am here to share some facts about Alpacas with you.

Alpacas are native to the Andes Mountains of South America.
We are smaller than our cousins, the llama.
There are two types of Alpacas: the Huacaya with its soft, crimpy fleece,
and the Suri with its long, silky locks.  Our fleece colors range from pure white to fawn, many shades of brown and grey, and jet black.  Sweaters and (garments) made from our fleece and are known for their softness, quality, and warmth.

Alpacas live 15- to 25-years. We grow to an average height of 36-inches at the top of our withers. The withers are at the top of our shoulders at the base of our neck. We weight is between 100 to 175 pounds when fully grown. We are easy to train and well suited for small farms.

Alpaca moms have a very high percentage of successful, problem free births. Momma Alpacas give birth to one baby, called a cria, a year. Momma Alpacas are pregnant 340 days or 11 and a half months a year. Like my mom Hopi. When we are born, we weigh between 15 to 19 pounds.

Alpacas eat hay, orchard grass, your lawn, timothy hay and greens. The boys love green beans, peas and carrots; the girls like broccoli, green beans and carrots. The llamas like cauliflower and carrots. We all love willow leaves. We all drink water. I heard that Oreo and Orca like herb tea. They sneak a sip from farm mom, Cindy's cup.

Did you know alpaca fiber was originally only for Royalty?  Alpaca fiber is so soft the Incas used the fiber to make fine fabric for the Royalty to wear.  But you don't have to be Royalty to wear it now!
